Replica Microscope for the production company La Factoría de los Sueños

At Additium3D, we don't just offer 3D printing, we offer end-to-end additive manufacturing solutions. Our expertise ranges from consultancy and design to production and final finishing, ensuring that each project is realised with the utmost precision and fidelity. A clear example of our commitment to excellence is our collaboration with The Dream FactoryZeiss, for the creation of replica Zeiss microscopes, used as trophies in its prestigious scientific awards.

The Challenge: Create a high fidelity replica for an Exclusive Trophy

The production company Factory of Dreams was looking for a innovative solution for your awards, something that not only had a striking aesthetic, but also captured the essence of science and technology. The concept was clear: a faithful replica of a Zeiss microscope, with all its details and finishes, that could be awarded as trophies in recognition of researchers and scientists.

The challenge The main challenge was to maintain a balance between fidelity and production feasibility. The original piece was composed of different materials and mechanisms, so transforming it into a 3D printed replica required a meticulous process of reverse engineering, material selection and advanced post-processing to achieve a result that was visually and tactilely similar to the original.

Reverse engineering and 3D scanning to capture every detail

To ensure that the replica was a faithful representation of the original microscope, we started with a high-precision 3D scanning. This process allowed us to obtain a digital model extremely detailedcapturing everything from the general structure to the most important small reliefs and textures of the original device.

Subsequently, a modelling process and file clean-upThe design was optimised for 3D printing without losing a single detail. Imperfections in the scan were corrected and adjustments were made to the thickness of certain sections to ensure the durability and stability of the final part.

SLA resin printing to ensure micrometric precision in each replica.

For this project, we opted for the SLA resin printing due to its ability to reproduce ultra fine details and provide a smooth surface, ideal for high aesthetic applications. We use our Form 4L by Formlabs, one of the most advanced resin printers on the marketThis allowed us to manufacture the replicas in one piece or in assemblable segments to facilitate finishing and reinforce the structure.

The choice of resin was also key. We opted for a high-strength resinwith properties that allow subsequent finishing and painting without compromising the integrity of the part. Thanks to the SLA, we were able to obtain a part with:

  • Micrometric accuracyfaithfully replicating the tiniest details.
  • Smooth surfaceready for post-processing without excessive sanding.
  • Durability and resistanceensuring that the trophy maintains its appearance over time.

Metallising and finishing to transform the resin into a Premium Trophy

Once the pieces were printed, the next step was to special treatment to give them the metallic finish characteristic of Zeiss microscopes. We use a electrolytic plating processThe surface of the piece can be covered with an ultra-thin metallic layer, generating a highly realistic visual and tactile effect.

In addition, we incorporate additional details to make the replica even more authentic:

  • Engraved methacrylate platesThe inscriptions on the original microscope.
  • Reflective vinylswhich replicate the optical and lighting elements.
  • Premium paint finishto highlight contrasts and give depth to details.

Each trophy underwent rigorous quality control to ensure that the texture, colour and weight were just right, achieving a piece that not only looked like a real microscope, but also conveyed the feeling of an exclusive and prestigious object.

Personalisation and presentation: A trophy at the height of Science

To complete the presentation, each replica was mounted on a engraved methacrylate baseThe name of the award and the prize-winner were included. In addition, it was placed inside a transparent methacrylate urnprotecting the piece and enhancing its presence at the awards ceremony.

The Result: A scientific trophy that merges art and technology

The end result was an impressive trophy, combining additive manufacturing technology, high-end finishes and premium presentation. The Dream Factory succeeded in delivering an award that not only recognised excellence in research, but also in the design of the trophy. reflected the innovative spirit of the scientific community.

Additive Manufacturing as a tool for exclusive and personalised rewards

This success story demonstrates how the 3D printing makes it possible to create unique and personalised objects that reinforce the identity of brands and events. The combination of technology, design and advanced finishing opens up endless possibilities for the creation of awards, recognitions and commemorative objects.
