un archivo .DICOM de una Resonancia Magn\u00e9tica en un modelo 3D tangible para ayudar en la planificaci\u00f3n de una operaci\u00f3n de cadera dislocada en el Hospital Universitario de La Fe en Valencia.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/article><article class=\"wpr-timeline-entry wpr-right-aligned elementor-repeater-item-525e755\" data-item-id=\"elementor-repeater-item-525e755\"><div class=\"wpr-timeline-entry-inner\"><div class=\"wpr-main-line-icon wpr-icon\"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"far class=\"wpr-description\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additium3D utiliz\u00f3 el software Slicer para convertir el archivo .DICOM en un modelo 3D, eligiendo la Tecnolog\u00eda SLS y Nylon 12 para la impresi\u00f3n debido a su precisi\u00f3n y resistencia. Se imprimieron dos conjuntos de modelos, uno a escala real y otro a una escala menor, para facilitar el an\u00e1lisis y planificaci\u00f3n quir\u00fargica por parte de los particip\u00f3 en un proyecto m\u00e9dico colaborando con el <a href=\"https:\/\/lafe.san.gva.es\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hospital Universitario de La Fe en Valencia<\/strong><\/a> para tratar la dislocaci\u00f3n de cadera de un paciente llamado Edu.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a6d4ede e-con-full e-flex wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no wpr-equal-height-no e-con e-child\" data-id=\"a6d4ede\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4cc95f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4cc95f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Son muchas las aplicaciones que tiene la Impresi\u00f3n 3D en el d\u00eda a d\u00eda, pero una de las que m\u00e1s nos hace sentir orgullosos en Additium3D es cuando nuestros medios de fabricaci\u00f3n nos permiten participar en proyectos m\u00e9dicos para ayudar en la salud de los dem\u00e1s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No es por tanto un misterio que uno de los trabajos que m\u00e1s nos sentimos orgullosos es de haber colaborado para ayudar al equipo de Cirug\u00eda del Hospital Universitario de La Fe en Valencia, en la operaci\u00f3n para solucionar la dislocaci\u00f3n de cadera que sufr\u00eda Edu.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Para poder llevarlo a cabo participaron muchas partes de nuestro equipo que fueron necesarias para convertir un simple archivo .DICOM, extra\u00eddo de una Resonancia Magn\u00e9tica, en un objeto impreso. Siempre todo con el objetivo de que los cirujanos fueran capaces de palpar y estudiar en directo la zona que iban a intervenir.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00bfQu\u00e9 nos demandaba el cliente?<\/h2>\n<p>El padre de Edu lleg\u00f3 a nosotros a trav\u00e9s de un amigo personal suyo que resulta ser uno de los clientes y al mismo tiempo proveedor m\u00e1s fieles de Additium3D. Su problema era que en La Fe no estaban preparados para hacer este tipo de trabajos, pero el cirujano ve\u00eda bastante importante poder estudiar en persona la zona a operar debido a la delicadez de la operaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Por ello, tras contactar con Jos\u00e9 Lu\u00eds, especialista en Fabricaci\u00f3n Aditiva en la zona de Levante del grupo Solitium, acab\u00f3 solicit\u00e1ndonos ayuda tanto en lo que viene a ser la creaci\u00f3n del modelo a partir de los datos escaneados al paciente, como en la impresi\u00f3n 3D de dicho modelo para su objetivo final: ser estudiado por los cirujanos.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00bfC\u00f3mo afront\u00f3 Additium3D las demandas del cliente?<\/h2>\n<p>La cuesti\u00f3n no solo resid\u00eda en la impresi\u00f3n, sino en como convertir el archivo .DICOM extra\u00eddo de las pruebas realizadas al paciente en un archivo limpio para poder imprimir correctamente y sin ruidos ni defectos lo deseado. Ellos hab\u00edan estado haciendo pruebas por su cuenta, pero no eran capaces de extraer la informaci\u00f3n limpia, y ah\u00ed es cuando acaban en Additium3D.<\/p>\n<p>Por otro lado, el otro tema a tratar consist\u00eda en la elecci\u00f3n adecuada de tecnolog\u00eda de impresi\u00f3n y material para plasmarlo de forma que los m\u00e9dicos pudieran manosearlo bien. En este caso, lo tuvimos claro desde el primer momento, ya que al ser todo el conjunto de huesos del tren inferior humano: coxis, pubis, sacro, cadera, cabeza de los h\u00fameros\u2026 Eran formas muy complejas que solo con Tecnolog\u00eda SLS, aprovechando su gran ventaja de no necesitar soportes para la impresi\u00f3n, pod\u00edamos aspirar a hacer correctamente. El material Nylon 12, para poder ofrecer el precio m\u00e1s competitivo con esta tecnolog\u00eda, as\u00ed como muy buena resistencia y acabado.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00bfC\u00f3mo cre\u00f3 el equipo de dise\u00f1o de Additium3D el modelo a imprimir?<\/h2>\n<p>Nuestra experiencia previa trabajando con .DICOM no era muy extensa, pero si que hemos trabajado de seguido con cl\u00ednicas de ecograf\u00eda 4D que ofrecen a los padres r\u00e9plicas de sus beb\u00e9s antes de nacer. El volumen de datos era mucho mayor en el caso de una resonancia magn\u00e9tica, pero la forma de trabajar muy similar, por lo que tras varias pruebas pudimos dar con el resultado deseado.<\/p>\n<p>Para estos casos el software Slicer es la opci\u00f3n m\u00e1s c\u00f3moda, ya que est\u00e1 pensado para trabajar precisamente con este tipo de datos. Es una herramienta muy sencilla de usar tras algunos tutoriales y con la que puedes manipular para eliminar el ruido que suelen generar estas pruebas. De esta forma, puedes maquillar suavizando las formas y aproxim\u00e1ndolas a la realidad, y manteniendo las dimensiones y las formas que es lo que realmente busca el cliente.<\/p>\n<p>En todas las ramas cient\u00edficas, la paciencia y el mimo son fundamentales para conseguir buenos resultados, pero cuando se trata de trabajar con archivos .DICOM y Slicer, esta realidad la debemos llevar al extremo para conseguir el resultado deseado. Y con mucha paciencia y mucho trabajo suavizando formas, fuimos capaces de obtener un modelo con un grado de aproximaci\u00f3n a la realidad m\u00e1ximo.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00bfC\u00f3mo imprimi\u00f3 el equipo de fabricaci\u00f3n de Additium3D el modelo?<\/h2>\n<p>Como se ha ya explicado previamente, desde el primer momento tuvimos claro que la mejor opci\u00f3n para afrontar este tipo de impresi\u00f3n era la Tecnolog\u00eda SLS. Este m\u00e9todo de fabricaci\u00f3n, que se basa en la fusi\u00f3n de un lecho de polvo por la acci\u00f3n de un l\u00e1ser, permite realizar impresiones sin soportes, siendo el propio cubo de polvo no sinterizado el soporte.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Esto era perfecto, ya que hacerlo en filamento resultaba muy poco conveniente tanto por los soportes que ser\u00edan necesarios como por el acabado que se conseguir\u00eda. Y en el caso de la resina el precio para estos tama\u00f1os y la tambi\u00e9n necesidad de soportes, lo hac\u00edan opciones muy poco adecuadas.<\/p>\n<p>El Nylon 12 es el material por excelencia que trabajamos en SLS, y para este caso era perfecto ya que nos ofrec\u00eda la resistencia que requer\u00eda la necesidad de manipularlo. Por ello, de mano de nuestro equipo FUSE 1 de Formlabs realizamos la impresi\u00f3n primero de 1 prueba en tama\u00f1o peque\u00f1o, para certificar que era apropiado y lo que buscaban. Y posteriormente de 2 conjuntos, uno por piezas (separada las cabezas de los h\u00fameros del cuerpo m\u00e1s grande) y otra a una escala menor en el que se imprim\u00eda todo unido.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>El motivo de esto era satisfacer los dos objetivos de los cirujanos:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>En el caso de la impresi\u00f3n por partes a escala real, los m\u00e9dicos apreciaron como estaban las concavidades y la cabeza de los h\u00fameros, y pudieron analizar c\u00f3mo se deb\u00eda mover la cadera dislocada para colocarse en su sitio<\/li>\n<li>En el caso de la impresi\u00f3n conjunta a escala menor, los m\u00e9dicos apreciaron como era la posici\u00f3n actual de la cabeza del h\u00famero dislocado, y por otro lado, como era la posici\u00f3n adecuada del h\u00famero correctamente colocado.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>El hecho de que la operaci\u00f3n fuera a realizarse a un ni\u00f1o, y por tanto su tama\u00f1o no fuera muy grande, permiti\u00f3 que en 2 impresiones fuera posible realizar la impresi\u00f3n de los dos conjuntos deseados.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusi\u00f3n<\/h2>\n<p>La impresi\u00f3n 3D es parte de nuestras vidas cada vez en m\u00e1s \u00e1mbitos, y uno en los que m\u00e1s recorrido tiene es a la hora de ayudar a los equipos m\u00e9dicos a practicar operaciones quir\u00fargicas antes de realizarse en la realidad.<\/p>\n<p>Additium3D como soluci\u00f3n integral de fabricaci\u00f3n 3D tiene experiencia en diferentes proyectos relacionados con el campo m\u00e9dico. Prueba de ello es el Caso que acab\u00f3 con \u00c9xito tanto en el modelaje a partir de un archivo .DICOM obtenido tras una resonancia magn\u00e9tica al paciente, como la posterior impresi\u00f3n 3D en Nylon 12 aprovechando la posibilidad de imprimir sin soporte que ofrece la Tecnolog\u00eda SLS.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div MRI scan into a tangible 3D model to assist in the planning of a dislocated hip operation at La Fe University Hospital in Valencia. Additium3D Procedure used Slicer software to convert the .DICOM file into a 3D model, choosing SLS Technology and Nylon 12 for printing due to its accuracy and strength. Two sets of models were printed, one at full scale and one at a smaller scale, to facilitate surgical analysis and planning by surgeons. Improvement 3D printing provided a tangible resource for better understanding and planning of the operation, demonstrating the usefulness of 3D printing in the medical field. SUCCESS STORY The case in detail Additium3D participated in a medical project collaborating with the Hospital Universitario de La Fe in Valencia to treat the dislocated hip of a patient named Edu. There are many applications that 3D Printing has in day to day life, but one of the ones that makes us most proud at Additium3D is when our manufacturing means allow us to participate in medical projects to help the health of others.  It is therefore no mystery that one of the jobs we are most proud of is to have collaborated to help the surgical team at the Hospital Universitario de La Fe in Valencia, in the operation to solve the hip dislocation suffered by Edu.  Many parts of our team were involved in order to convert a simple .DICOM file, extracted from an MRI, into a printed object. All with the aim that the surgeons would be able to palpate and study the area to be operated on live. What did the client demand from us? Edu's father came to us through a personal friend of his who happens to be one of Additium3D's most loyal customers and suppliers. His problem was that La Fe was not prepared to do this type of work, but the surgeon thought it was quite important to be able to study the area to be operated on in person due to the delicacy of the operation. Therefore, after contacting Jos\u00e9 Lu\u00eds, specialist in Additive Manufacturing in the Levante area of the Solitium group, he ended up asking us for help both in the creation of the model from the data scanned from the patient, and in the 3D printing of the model for its final objective: to be studied by the surgeons. How did Additium3D deal with the client's demands? The question was not only about printing, but also about how to convert the .DICOM file extracted from the patient's scans into a clean file in order to be able to print correctly and without noise or defects what they wanted. They had been doing tests on their own, but they were not able to extract the clean information, and that's when they ended up at Additium3D. On the other hand, the other issue to deal with was the right choice of printing technology and material to print it in such a way that the doctors could handle it well. In this case, we had it clear from the very first moment, since it was the whole set of bones of the human lower body: coccyx, pubis, sacrum, hip, head of the humerus... They were very complex shapes that only with SLS Technology, taking advantage of its great advantage of not needing supports for printing, we could aspire to do correctly. The material Nylon 12, to be able to offer the most competitive price with this technology, as well as very good resistance and finish. How did the Additium3D design team create the model to be printed? Our previous experience working with .DICOM was not very extensive, but we have often worked with 4D ultrasound clinics that offer parents replicas of their babies before birth. The volume of data was much larger in the case of an MRI, but the way of working was very similar, so after several tests we were able to find the desired result. For these cases, the Slicer software is the most convenient option, as it is designed to work precisely with this type of data. It is a very simple tool to use after some tutorials and with which you can manipulate to eliminate the noise that these tests usually generate. In this way, you can make up by smoothing the shapes and bringing them closer to reality, while maintaining the dimensions and shapes that the client is really looking for. In all scientific fields, patience and care are essential to achieve good results, but when it comes to working with .DICOM and Slicer files, this reality must be taken to the extreme to achieve the desired result. And with a lot of patience and a lot of work smoothing shapes, we were able to obtain a model with a maximum degree of approximation to reality. How did the Additium3D manufacturing team print the model? As previously explained, from the very first moment we were clear that the best option for this type of printing was SLS Technology. This manufacturing method, which is based on the fusion of a bed of powder by the action of a laser, allows printing without supports, being the unsintered powder cube itself the support.  This was perfect, as doing it in filament was very inconvenient both for the supports that would be necessary and for the finish that would be achieved. And in the case of resin, the price for these sizes and the need for supports made it a very unsuitable option. Nylon 12 is the material par excellence that we work with at SLS, and for this case it was perfect as it offered us the resistance that the need to manipulate it required.
